Bottle Bivy Pack up

Today in class we had to destroy the bottle bivy for when the school moved. Instead of throwing the bottles out we recycled them. We made pooper scoopers, but you can also use them to clean out the house spouting. We gave them to all the classes at school. They all said " Thank you". I think it was more fun destroying the bottle bivy more than buiding it.

What a MAGICAL journey! We were inspired by Mark Herring.  We were enthused by our community.  We persevered and persisted!  We are now enjoying another amazing learning space.

Today our very special friends from Room 1 came for a visit!  

Bottle Bivy MAGIC!

Today we completed a very long journey.  It all began way back in term two when Mark Herring posted a picture of a bottle bivy online.  The collaboration began and we set off to complete the challenge....  We will share our timelapse footage soon....

Today we celebrated and we can't wait to bring the new learning space into play in our daily learning..... What do you think of the finished project?

Another amazing session today and we ran out of bottles! The bivy is looking AMAZING...

The bottle Re-build

As the Ulrich Aliminium Ute pulled up I was so excited to get started on the new and improved bivy. It all started out when the bottle bivy fell down so we got a sponsor; the sponsor was Zack’s dad Corey. When he came, I thought they would not fit in the door way because they were so big like seriously Mrs. K could fit in them with standing up.  There were eight pieces and he also bought us very sticky double sided tape. As we all started we got the hang of it and we got a lot done compared to what we could finish in a day of gluing it. We got half of it done in like an hour and a half which is pretty good. I can not wait until we finish it and can start learning in it, YAY.

We could see the frame for the new bigger, faster and stronger bottle bivy. As he walked in we immediately noticed that it was a lot bigger than we expected. Mrs K can stand up in it, that’s how tall it is. Any way back to the story, the frame wobbled like jelly. When we had all the frames in place Corey got a nut and bolt and screwed it onto the frame and then it didn’t wobble as much. Then he came in with 250m of industrial double sided tape and then we were off at the speed of light. Cory had an expectation of how high it would be and we bet it by about 2 rows. Today its got so high that only the very tall people can reach now...

The frame wobbled as Corey came, that’s when the class got excited. As he came in it was so bigger then we expected. When it was brought in we got straight into it with all the empty milk bottles we had collected. It is so much faster now because of the frame. Within the first hour we had done about ten rows.  It was like we were a speed machine but really it was all the team work and the frame of course. I think we will need to start drinking more milk to get those empty milk bottles.  

The Bottle Bivy Re-Re-Re build

When the Ulrich Aluminum Ute pulled up the bottle bivy re-re-re build was officially starting. Zach’s dad Corey had agreed to help us re-build the bottle bivy and not only that but build us a frame and give us heaps of double sided tape as well! The frame is shaped like the octagon in town. Yesterday we started re-building the bottle bivy and we got about half way through the process and we are doing some more building to day. Mrs K reckons it will last WAY longer because we are using double sided tape instead of hot glue guns. Also the new bottle bivy is tall instead of wide.

Bottle bivy rebuild (again!)

When the Ullrich aluminium Ute pulled up we knew what time it was.  Did you have an answer? If you thought bottle bivy rebuild time then you’re right! We had Zack's dad Corey make us a frame that was based on something that's one of a kind here in New Zealand. I bet you have no idea what it is and I bet you haven't seen it either. It's Dunedin's very own Octagon! Corey came in with the foundations for the double demolished igloo of milk bottles and when Corey Brought the steel frames in we saw that they were about 2 metres tall! ( too tall for us to reach the top that is!) Corey also gave us 250 metres worth of double sided tape. We got about 11 rows done in an hour. We got so much done we'd only need a few more days of work to finish it.

Bottle Bivy Build

We have been working with a group of teachers around New Zealand to build a bottle bivy. You can check it out on the Bottle Bivy Build Blog or our class blog.

When we got to school on Monday the bivy had collapsed again. We do not know why? Maybe we didn’t have it balanced correctly, maybe the glue gets brittle in the cold over the weekend?
Today Zack’s dad came for a visit. He works for Ullrich Aluminium and he is very clever. He is going to help us with a framework to start all over again. We think it will be even better this time. What do you think?

Bottle Bivy Rebuild...

My theory on why the Bottle Bivy fell down.

Well there could be the possibility that Mrs K knocked it down so everyone would do some writing in the holidays. 

More counting, more gluing, more layers...

Bottle bivy build...

Today we have finally started on our class igloo! It looks fantastic! We have made it out of 366 milk bottles! WOW!

Firstly, we carefully taped together all the scraps of frontrunner we saved from St Clair school when they had their classes redone.

 It was quite an effort to flip it over.  Do you like the pattern?

 Then we all sat on it and declared it ready for the build....

Then we began the build.  We carefully marked out the outside circle using a pencil, string and a piece of chalk.  Teams worked together to glue bottles together in twos, then we began the first layer.  It was really hard to glue the first layer to the carpet.

We watched the video of the build online and checked we were ready!

After that it got faster and easier.  What amazing team work...

We are extremely grateful to Denise, Jacqui, Christine, Lynne and Sandra who all came in and helped out during the day!  We are hoping for lots more help over the next few days.  

We had visits from Room 1, Room 4 and Room 7 throughout the day and we skyped Myross Bush School from Invercargill and Rosmini College in Auckland.  

We are very proud of our efforts today!

Bottle Bivy Build on MONDAY - All welcome to join in the fun...

Starting the bottle bivy

In room 6 we have been collecting milk bottles.  We washed the ones that smelt then we put them in bundles of 10 and tied them.  We have lots of milk bottles in tens and we have got to 250. We have put them in the container and they are hanging on a desk. We love collecting them and putting them in bundles of 10. It is so fun. We have to get to 400.We are past half way there we need about 200 more. But we still have more to wash and tie.
